Art can be shocking! 02/29/2020
“The good thing about shocking is that it clears the brain of preconceptions for a moment, & in that moment the work has a chance to cut through all the habits & learnt behavior of the viewer & make a fresh impact, before all the conditioning crowds in again.”
― Viv Albertine
Why did you choose this idea?
I was discussing to myself about what to write for this topic. The first thing I thought of when I heard about the topic in class was music videos like “Wrecking Ball” or “Mother’s Daughter” by Miley Cyrus or “Me! Me! Me!” by TeddyLoid feat. Daoko. So I was thinking about writing about how American fashion is shocking to countries like India where the clothing is more conservative. Afterward, I thought about writing about how different ethnicity has a different breast size because of their diet. Which lead me to research and thinking about food. While I was researching I needed to go to the restroom, and ,BAM, I remembered the fact of how gummy bears can cause diarrhea! And I was like “Eureka! Now, this is a shocking topic that I have got to talk about!”

What did you hope to communicate?
I wanted to warn and educate my audience about how overeating gummies can lead to diarrhea. So they won’t experience the tragedy of loose stool, unless they had constipation… then overeating gummy bears could help solve that problem! According to studies by scholars such as European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, sugar free gummies has a higher significant laxative effect, in case anyone needed something stronger than regular gummies for their constipation.
How successful do you think you were?
Mildly successful. The more people see my blog, the more the awareness would spread so I think the success depends on the viewing traffic.
What would you do different if you did it again?
I would choose a constipation medicine bottle to hold the gummies instead, to take the image. In this image, I used a cramp medicine bottle instead because it was already empty.
What is another idea you might explore through “shocking art”?
As answered in the first question, I would explore ethnicity and their different breast size, or fashion difference around the world.
